The Herb Garden
Sarah Garland
A Complete Guide to growing scented, culinary and medicinal herbs. My own journey
to establish WonderWorks was inspired by my faith in and love of the plant world,
and this book has been a favourite resource for many years. Thanks be to the goddess
Artemesia that Penguin books is still publishing it. While no one book ever has everything,
this book contains history, inspiring pictures, chapters on different kinds of herb
gardens (scented, medicinal and culinary). It has some very useful charts listing
tall herbs, short herbs, sun herbs, shade herbs, herbs for colour, methods of cultivation
and drying, and even a bit about the known medicinal uses. Don't feel discouraged
if you have the urge tohave these herbal allies around you, but live in an apartment
-- there is a good chapter on container gardening.
Harrowsmith Illustrated Book of Herbs
Patrick Lima
This book is exquisite in its grace. Patrick Lima and his friend John
Scanlon grow herbs on the northern end of Ontario's Bruce Peninsula.
Temperatures there can dip to 40 below. The Illustrated Book of Herbs
presents the material in a sensibly organized fashion. When he talks
about rosemary, the reader gets all the information they need, from
soil preparation and seeding to planting and harvesting. Lima includes
such "herbs" as peonies, sweet cicely and roses. His intuition
and learning has helped him discover the healing powers of such plants,
along with the colour and beauty they add to a northern garden. The
pictures in the book are gorgeous.
