Essential
Oils
Listed below are brief descriptions of ten of the most popular essential
oils WonderWorks carries. Prices are available on request.
All of the oils are pure essential oils unless marked something like,
"Rose Oil, 1% in Jojoba." Pure essential oils should not be used directly
on the skin, but mixed with a carrier oil first, such as our unscented Massage and
Body oil.
Benediction Oil
For deep healing. Contains angelica essential oil.
Bergamot-- Uplifting. Very useful for depression or chronic stress. Used to
relieve rinary tract infections as well as acne and infected skin conditions. Bergamot
inhibits herpes simplex 1 virus (cold sores), and can be dabbed on the affected site
at the beginning of an outbreak. Note: this citrus oil especially increases the skin's
sensitivity to sunlight. Severe burns can result. Avoid direct sunlight when applied
to the skin.
Bois de Rose (Rosewood) -- Relaxing, excellent when used to scent a room.
Dry skin.
Calendula -- Used as an infant balm, face oil, and for all delicate skin,
burns and inflammation.
Eucalyptus -- One of the best oils for colds, flu, upper respiratory tract
infections and sinus infections. Kills airborne bacteria when sprayed in the air.
Also used to help sore, aching muscles.
Lavender -- One of the most useful oils. Balancing emotionally and physically.
Good for insomnia, anxiety, irritability; for children who will not settle, and have
trouble sleeping. Also helps dry skin, and burns, including sunburns. Very antiseptic.
Analgesic.
Lemon -- Uplifting. Immune system stimulant. General tonic. Helpful in detoxifying
the liver. Note: all citrus essential oils increase the skin's sensitivity to sunlight.
Avoid direct sunlight when applied to the skin.
Mugwort Flower Oil -- Lunar qualities help to open and sensitize -- an excellent
woman's remedy during menstuation and birthing as it tends to disperse obstructions
and increase bodily flows.
Patchouli -- Reminiscent of the sixties! Good for dry skin, and is an anti-fungal.
Peppermint -- Helps relieve digestive tract upset, constipation, diarrhoea
and stomach pain. Also good on headaches. It is a "cooling" oil.
Pine -- Respiratory system tonic, sore muscles. Balances the adrenal cortex.
Rose -- (1% in Jojoba.) Soothing to the emotional and physical heart. Powerful
aid in times of stress, anxiety, or insomnia. Balances the women's menstrual cycle.
Excellent for use in skin care, especially dry and blemished skin.
Rose Geranium -- Balances the adrenal cortex. Good for cases of exhaustion,
especially chronic exhaustion. Balances the women's reproductive cycle, and is good
for PMS symptoms. Diuretic. Skin astringent, use on oily skin.
St. John's Wort Oil -- Blooms at the summer solstice, thus its ability to
seal and solidify. St. John's Wort is for protection at times of vulnerability; it
is a wound remedy, nervine and sun screen. Also good in the winter for those who
feel sun starved.

The Flower Essence Society (FES)
FES Quintessentials
FES
of Nevada City, California has a beautiful line of infused oils made from wild crafted
or bio-dynamic ally grown flowers. One of our favourites at WonderWorks has always
been the FES Dandelion flower oil -- good for deep muscle tension. Then we found
the following excerpt on the topic of breast self-examination by Susus Weed in New
Age Journal:
"Dandelion has a special affinity for breast tissue. Regular use of dandelion
flower oil, made from chopped up flower, promotes deep relaxation of the breast tissue
and facilitates the release of emotions buried there. When applied regularly the
entire breast area, glowing gloden dandelion flower oil strengthens one's sense of
self-worth."
No wonder we liked it! For more, see Weed's book, Breast Cancer Health.
Commonly known as the California Essences. The Professional Kit comes
with 72 essences. Individual bottles are also available. We also keep a limited supply
of the continually expanding research essences from FES. Ask for our catalogue.
FES Herbal Infused Oils
We highly recommend these oils which are sun-extracted in an organic olive
oil base and further potentized with the corresponding flower essence. Prices are
in one and four ounce sizes.

Nervine.

St. John's Wort.

Desert Alchemy Essences
Alaskan Flower Essences
While
these essences are new to Wonderworks, we think that they are definitely worth taking
a look at. Perhaps it's something about the "northern" nature of the flowers
and trees that are used.

Healing Wise
Susan Weed
Susan, in WonderWorks' opinion, is one of the foremost herbalists of the past 100
years. She has made a magnificent contribution to the progressive thought related
to healing and how it actually occurs in the body. She knows, for instance, that
healing involves activities such as the stories we tell each other, and that full
healing heals our community and the planet as well as ourselves. These topics and
others are covered in her dissertations on the scientific, heroic and wise woman
traditions of healing. This book is for anyone who has or is considering taking the
journey of healing.
The book includes chapters on only seven (yes! only seven) plants, and shows what
marvelous healing can be accomplished with these. Susan has each plant speak for
itself as she takes you on a weed walk in order to teach you how to find it along
with its uses and recipes. These new-found relationships are certain to thoroughly
excite the reader. Last, but not least, the book contains Susan's exellent section
on picking and preparing your own herbs.
Susan's first book is also available: The Wise Woman Herbal for the Child Bearing
Years. Don't let the title fool you -- this book contains valuable information
for everybody, and is in constant use in our house.
